Don Melchor

Enrique Tirado joined Vina y Toro in 1993, having studied viticulture and winemaking at the pretigious Catholic University in Santiago, Chile. In 1997, he became chief winemaker of Concha y Toro's fine wines and soon after that, Chief Winemake of Don Melchor.

During his  tenure, Don Melchor has achieved its highest accolades, most notably the unprecedented score of 96 in the Wine Spectator for both Don Melchor 2003 and 2005. The 2001 vintage was listed at No.4 in the 'Best Wines of the Year' by the Wine Spectator. Enrique Tirado also served as co-winemaker for Almaviva, working in collaboration with Mouton Rothschild's Patrick Leon for seven years. He is currently the consulting Chilean winemaker for Almaviva.

The latest vintage release of Don Melchor, the 2011, was recently awarded 95 points by influential US wine journalist James Suckling.

The grapes for Don Melchor are harvested from 114 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Puente Alto. The vines, 30 year old on average, yield very low amounts of tiny, compact grape bunches which are highly concentrated in colour and fruit flavours.
